A Yes! Success Story

In September 2023, Ann Kagiri started a new position working as an intern in the development department at Voltalia, in Nairobi, Kenya. The company is an international player in renewable energies. Find out how YES! made this happen!

Ann, how did it all start?

I met the Country Manager for Kenya & East Africa at YES! One day I arrived early, before the conference started, and I saw that Voltalia had a stand, so I went to speak to them. Then I realised they were an IPP – and I’d always wanted to work at an IPP.

I was nervous at first. But I asked about internship opportunities, and he gave me his card. I emailed after YES! and he forwarded my email to the HR department. I had two meetings with the HR team and another with the team in Kenya.  And I got the position!

What does your work involve?

I am involved in meetings with the team and understanding and documenting our different projects. And I’m learning about the business and the technical and financial aspects of our work too. I have always looked for jobs and positions in renewable energy, and now I have one.

How did you hear about YES! in the beginning?

I was on a bus on my way to an internship in Nairobi – and I saw a billboard! So, I registered to attend. YES! surpassed my expectations.  I didn’t think it would be that big. I went every day.  It was a friendly event and I still talk to most of the students I met – we energise each other about our careers. YES! has really helped me. I wouldn’t be in my current position if it wasn’t for YES!

Do you have any advice for other young people thinking about a career in energy?

Take advantage of conferences like this! You get an idea of what you could do – my eyes were opened, and I found my purpose. I would say to everyone, don’t just sit there – explore. Even if you’re not sure exactly what you are interested in, you will find something. And if you are already interested, you will find the opportunities you are looking for!

Bertrand Tournier, Country Manager Kenya & East Africa at Voltalia, said:

I had just started my job in Nairobi, and this was my first event – it was perfect to be at aef and to meet our business partners there. I was very happy that YES! was running alongside and really impressed with the young people I met. They were not afraid to talk and be interested in our work. As we grow our business in Kenya and East Africa, we are reaching more people and more youth.  Ann asks such good and interesting questions in our meetings, and it helps us to focus on our presentation and our messaging.  We want to have young people in our business and for them to be part of the adventure. This is just the beginning.
